Emissions Component Warranties

Depending on the age and mileage of your vehicle, certain emissions components are eligible for a federally mandated manufacturer’s warranty in the event of a failed emissions test that was the result of a manufacturer defect. This coverage may extend up to eight years or 80,000 miles.

To check your vehicle’s eligibility, please consult your owner’s manual, contact your car dealer, or visit the website of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The Performance Warranty covers repairs that are required during the first two years or 24,000 miles of vehicle use (whichever first occurs) because the vehicle failed an emissions test. Specified major emissions control components are covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever first occurs). The specified major emissions control components only include the catalytic converters, the electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU), and the onboard emissions diagnostic (OBD) device or computer.

The Design and Defect warranty covers repair of emissions control or emissions related parts that fail to function or function improperly because of a defect in materials or workmanship for 2 years or 24,000 miles (whichever first occurs), and the specified major emissions control components mentioned above for 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever first occurs). The manufacturer can deny this warranty coverage if evidence shows that the emissions component failure was caused by improper use or maintenance and not caused by a defect.
